The Special Operations Division (SOD) operates as part of Field Operations and provides operational support to the Sheriff's Office as well as local, state, and federal law enforcement partners by coordinating planning and operations for special events and initiatives involving Sheriff's Office resources.
The SOD also provides equipped and trained specialized units capable of providing an immediate response as necessary to meet growing demands of both emergency and non-emergency needs of Richmond County.
Among the assignments given to this team are high risk warrant service, barricaded dangerous subjects, hostage rescue and search and rescue. These deputies also provide support to other divisions within this agency, as well as, to outside agencies upon request.
Special Operations is commanded by Lieutenant Lewis Blanchard.
Special Operations currently consist of five separate units. These include:
