On April 22, 2024, at 1519 hours Deputy Joshua Williams was approached by a citizen at the Spring House Apartment complex, in reference to a young child in a pond drowning. Deputy Williams saw the child across the pond trying to stay above water. Deputy Williams started to cross the pond toward the child, and when the water became too deep for him to touch the bottom, he took parts of his uniform off so that he could swim. A maintenance worker observed Deputy Williams swimming toward the child and was able to help him get the child out of the water. Once the child was out of the water, Deputy Williams checked her to see if she was alert and breathing. The child had no signs of injury, and was breathing normally.

Joshua Williams willingness to go above and beyond any given assignment or situation presented to him is an asset to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. 

 On February 15th, 2024, at 2022 hours, Deputy Hayes responded to South-Bound Deans Bridge Road near Morgan Road in reference to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, Deputy Hayes found a female victim who was agonal breathing and her right leg was severed below the knee. Deputy Hayes immediately applied a tourniquet to the victim's leg and started CPR. Deputy Hayes continued CPR for an extended period after medical personnel arrived on the scene. This action allowed medical personnel to treat other injuries and prepare her for transport to the trauma center.

On March 5, 2019, Corporal Eard Trimmingham, Deputy Prizette Presberry, Deputy Wallace Murphy and Deputy Richard Russell responded to 1241 10^th Street in reference to a house fire. Upon arrival, deputies found the home engulfed in flames and a female screaming from inside the front door of the residence. As Deputy Presberry got to the door, it was learned that she could not open it due to a locked deadbolt on a metal security door. Deputy Presberry went to his car, got a pry bar, and immediately pried open the door allowing the female to exit the residence. After the female exited the house, she advised Cpl. Trimmingham that a male subject was still inside. Cpl. Trimmingham returned to the front of the residence to attempt to locate the subject inside the home. Cpl. Trimmingham got down on the floor of the residence and crawled through the thick smoke finding the subject unresponsive lying on the floor.  Cpl. Trimmingham pulled the subject out with the assistance of other deputies. Once outside, Deputy Wallace Murphy and Deputy Richard Russell administered CPR until EMS arrived. The female subject was unharmed and the male subject was transported to Doctor's Hospital where he is in stable condition but on a ventilator. If not for the quick actions of these deputies, our community may have suffered the loss of two citizens.

Upon arrival, Deputy Runyon observed that building 900 of Pinnacle Place Apartments (500 Caldwell Dr. Hephzibah, Ga. 30815) was on fire. Deputy Runyon was advised by the property manager that an elderly female lived in apartment A and was also in a wheelchair. Deputy Runyon was able to gain entry into the residence of apartment A which was on fire. Deputy Runyon observed a female slumped over in a wheelchair unresponsive. She then pulled the female from the wheelchair getting her to the door. Deputy Guy Newman arrived on the scene and they were able to get the female outside and began CPR until Gold Cross arrived on scene. Deputy Keli Runyon and Deputy Guy Newman then went to the back of the burning building and found three individuals and one child still inside on the first and second floor apartments.  The remaining individuals were also brought to safety.

Due to the quick response of Deputy Runyon and Deputy Newman they were able to help render aid during a structure fire.

Starting Salary for a 84 Hour Georgia P.O.S.T. Officer is $1524.40 bi-weekly ($39,634.32 annually). After two years of consecutive service, the salary increases to $1,644.36 bi-weekly ($42,753.42).

On November 15, 2018, Deputy Michael Bracken was dispatched to a possible drug overdose. On arrival, Deputy Bracken was guided to the upstairs bathroom where the complainant was administering CPR to an unresponsive male.  The complainant advised Deputy Bracken that the male was her brother and when he fell asleep, she became alarmed by the way her brother began to breathe.  The complainant also stated that her brother uses Heroin and she believed he had overdosed. Deputy Bracken turned the subject on his side to clear his airway and then placed him on his back and administered 4mg of NARCAN while the complainant continued CPR.

Gold Cross responded and the subject was transported to AUMC for further treatment. Because of Deputy Michael Bracken's prompt response to render aid and to administer NARCAN to the unresponsive subject, a life was saved.

On September 20, 2018, Deputy McCall along with Deputy Morgan was dispatched to 1014 Adrian Street, Apartment B in reference to an attempted suicide. Upon arrival, the two deputies observed an unresponsive female lying on the ground with a male sitting on the left side of her. Both deputies observed the female was not breathing and a male attempting to give her CPR. Deputy McCall also observed the female subject’s face turning blue.  Deputy McCall then began giving chest compressions. Deputies advised the male to give the unresponsive female 2 breaths after each 30 chest compressions administered.  The female began breathing after 4 cycles of chest compressions and breaths. The subject became stable enough to sit up as a Gold Cross supervisor checked her vitals. The subject was transported to University Hospital’s Emergency room by South Star Med 14. A life was saved as a result of Deputy McCall and Deputy Morgan promptly responding to render aid to the unresponsive female.

On March 4, 2018, Deputy Travis Clark responded to an apartment on Essie McIntyre Blvd. in reference to a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, Deputy Clark found the subject inside the residence with his son and daughter. On November 30, 2017, Investigator Kris Lapham was notified of unauthorized charges at various businesses over the last few days, with the RCSO’s Visa Credit Card in an amount totaling over $18,000.00.  Additional Investigators began responding to various businesses throughout neighboring counties to acquire video surveillance footage of possible suspects and purchase information from the card.  Video surveillance footage and purchase information from the card was obtained from over 10 businesses depicting at least two suspects involved in the use of the credit card information.  Investigator Lapham continued to work over the next several weeks with developed leads from other agencies in an attempt to learn the identity of the suspects. With the aid of law enforcement databases, contacts from other law enforcement agencies, criminal history records, and social media sites Investigator Lapham was able to identify both subjects involved in the crime and obtain arrest warrants. As the result of diligence and dedication, Investigator Lapham was able to make an arrest and solve the case.

            The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce the development of a safe space program for internet exchanges. The Sheriff’s Office is designating safe spaces where people can meet to exchange internet purchases that will be under 24-hour surveillance by our deputies.

            Too often, our citizens are victimized when they meet to make the exchanges in poorly lit or unprotected parking lots. These newly designated safe spaces are at the parking lots of the old Law Enforcement Center at 401 Walton Way, The Charles B. Webster detention center at 1941 Phinizy Road, along with the Marshal’s Office space at the Municipal Building located at 535 Telfair Street.

            These spaces are not directly supervised, but will be under surveillance by the Sheriff’s Office and Marshal’s Office and are at locations where police are constantly present.

            It is important to remember that each citizen is responsible for the transactions they conduct and they should make every effort to insure they conduct their business in a safe and productive manner. We anticipate these spaces will provide a safe environment for these transactions and a deterrent to anyone trying to conduct fraud.

On October 5, 2017, at 0042 hours, a murder occurred on Fifteen Street at Harper Street.   The suspect was spotted on foot fleeing the scene, running across Fifteen Street towards Chaffee Avenue.   The path in which the suspect had taken was checked again by responding units for any overlooked evidence.  The victim’s purse was discovered in the rear of a parking lot on Chaffee Ave.  Corporal Matthew Mealing discovered marks in the dirt median going into the parking lot next to where the victim’s purse was located. Upon checking the bushes surrounding this area, Corporal Matthew Mealing located the suspect hiding in the bushes. A .22 magnum derringer was located in one of the suspect’s shoes. The suspect later admitted to committing the murder and armed robbery. As a result of team work and great investigative skills, the suspect was immediately taken into custody.

Corporal Matthew Mealing is a credit to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Augusta Richmond County.

Deputies Keith Inman and Jayson Williams responded to 3024 Washington Rd. on February 6, 2017, in reference to an unresponsive male in a vehicle. Upon arrival they discovered a male subject with a weak pulse and shallow respiration. A short time later the subject stopped breathing. Deputies Inman and Williams reacted quickly and began CPR on the subject until EMS arrived. Due to the prompt actions of the responding deputies, the subject was revived and started to breathe on his own again.

While patrolling, he noticed a suspicious black male subject in the backyard of 3301 Young Forest Drive running towards the side door of the residence. Due to Dep. Crispin's knowledge and familiarity with the community, he knew that the subject did not belong to that residence. Lieutenant Elijah Parker was informed by an unknown person that they saw three black males leaving a residence on Gerald Drive with one carrying a gun. When they entered the residence, they located a black male in the bathtub naked with a pillow case over his head and tied up. After further investigation, it was revealed that the subject Deputy Allen Crispin apprehended, along with two other subjects that were later identified, were responsible for the robbery. Due to great teamwork from all Deputies involved, these suspects were identified and arrested.

Arriving at the scene, they observed a vehicle submerged in water and a male subject struggling to stay above water. The subject attempted to avoid being pulled from the water by the deputies. Deputy McMurtry and Deputy Lewis made their way to a dock and as the subject was swimming pass, Deputy Lewis held Deputy McMurtry by his duty belt allowing him to reach out and grab the subject pulling him to safety. During the investigation it, was discovered that the subject in question had assaulted his girlfriend the night before and was attempting to take his own life believing that he had killed her. The vehicle the subject was driving had also been stolen by the subject the night before from a gas station on East Boundary.

On August 13, 2016, Deputy Jason Cunningham took a report for an entering an auto where several credit cards were stolen. The cards were subsequently used at various locations around Augusta. Deputy Jason Cunningham completed a thorough follow up, gathering information and video from these various locations. Deputy Cunningham then placed a BOLO for the subjects and the car involved. Deputy Cunningham also notified the Columbia County Crime Suppression Sergeant of the incident and all available descriptions. That night, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office located a car and several suspects matching the information provided by Dep. Cunningham. Deputy Cunningham responded to the scene on his off time and identified the car and suspects from the video he had collected. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office CID was notified and an investigation began. Deputy Jason Cunningham took a personal interest in the case and assisted CID with the investigation. As a result of Deputy Cunningham's action, the arrests led to the clearance of numerous entering auto cases in both Richmond County and Columbia County.

On July 4, 2016 at approximately 1715 hours, Deputy Richard Palocsik and Deputy William Jarrett, while patrolling in the Sheriff's Office boat, were dispatched to a suicidal person in the middle of the Savannah River. Upon arrival, they observed a male subject in the water yelling for them to shoot him. They also saw Deputy Ryan Jones swimming from the shore with a life vest on towards the subject. Deputy Ryan Jones got into the Sheriff’s Office boat with Deputies Palocsik and Jarrett. The deputies tried talking to the subject to encourage him to get out of the water, but the subject refused. A life jacket was thrown to the subject which he threw aside and multiple attempts were made to try and pull the subject into the boat. The subject was combative and refused multiple attempts to rescue him. DNR, who was on the scene by this time, threw a rope to the subject. The subject then tied the rope around his neck and dived under the boat. Seeing this, Deputy Jarrett and Deputy Jones dived into the water and then began to struggle with the subject to remove the rope from his neck. Deputy William Jarrett and Deputy Ryan Jones subdued the subject in the water and with assistance of others, removed the subject from the water and placed the subject in the boat. The subject was then transported to GRU hospital.

  On April 12, 2016 Corporal James Ouzts was working special duty at the S Bar at 1505 North Leg Rd.  At approximately 0130 hours, Corporal Ouzts heard a gunshot come from the area of Idlewild Dr. and then drove toward the sound searching for any signs.  Corporal Ouzts observed a white Ford Taurus with a GA paper tag, occupied by two black males turning onto North Leg road with the headlights turned off. Corporal Ouzts initiated a traffic stop making contact with the driver and passenger. Corporal Ouzts explained to the driver that he heard a gunshot come from the area where the driver was just seen, and the driver gave Corporal Ouzts permission to search his person and the vehicle. As Corporal Ouzts had the driver exit the vehicle, the driver stated that there was a pistol in the vehicle. Corporal Ouzts recovered a black Ruger .357 magnum revolver with five live rounds and one spent casing that was located between the driver’s seat and the center console.  As Corporal Ouzts was securing the weapon and the driver in his car, dispatch put out a call for shots fired, one down on Idlewild Dr. Both subjects and the weapon were turned over to CID and the subjects were also charged with the murder of the victim on Idlewild Dr.  Corporal Ouzts took the initiative to respond to an incident that was beyond the scope of his special, and was able to catch two murder suspects before the incident was ever reported.

  On April 22, 2016 at approximately 0805 hours, Corporal Patrick Blanchard responded to 1206 Eisenhower Drive in reference to an alarm. While en-route to the call, dispatch advised that there was a male on fire at the residence. When Corporal Blanchard arrived, he found the sunroom on the rear of the home engulfed in flames and a male subject on fire attempting to crawl out. Corporal Blanchard was unable to reach the subject so he retrieved his fire extinguisher and returned to the subject. Corporal Blanchard and Gold Cross EMS were able to remove the subject from the rear of the house. EMS took over care of the subject while Corporal Blanchard continued to extinguish the fire until the Fire Department arrived on the scene. Although the victim later died from his injuries sustained in the fire, another resident of the home was uninjured in the fire and several animals were safely removed from the house. This incident serves as an example of how an otherwise routine call can turn into a dramatic situation.

   On Saturday, April 2, 2016 Deputy Christopher Tucker (T-8) was dispatched to the scene of a single vehicle accident on the 1800 Block of Gordon Hwy.  On his arrival Deputy Tucker found the vehicle in flames with a driver and three passengers still inside the vehicle.  Deputy Charles Cramer (T-15) arrived on the scene shortly after Deputy Tucker’s arrival to help with the incident. While Deputy Tucker was assisting the driver and the three passengers from the vehicle, Deputy Cramer gathered several fire extinguishers from additional patrol cars at the scene to keep the flames at bay.  Deputy Christopher Tucker’s and Deputy Charles Cramer's quick thinking and speed to react was instrumental in the rescue efforts.

On December 25, 2015, while on routine patrol, Deputy Tricia Bourne heard fellow Deputy Ty Dailey notify dispatch that he had been flagged down at the intersection of Deans Bridge Rd and Meadowbrook drive by a motorist in reference to his wife being in labor and worried that they would not make it to the hospital in time. Deputy Tricia Bourne was in the area and headed that way to offer assistance if needed. Upon arrival, Deputy Bourne found Mrs. Brittney Terry in the front seat of the vehicle in active labor and the babies’ head crowning. As Deputy Ty Dailey relayed information to dispatch, Deputy Bourne assisted Mrs. Terry with the birth of her son. Shortly after the baby was delivered EMS and the fire department arrived on scene. At this time Deputy Tricia Bourne placed the newborn on his mother's chest and turned the care of the infant and his mother over to EMS. Deputy Tricia Bourne also visited the hospital the next day to check on the mother and the child.

I would like to Commend Deputy Tricia Bourne for her fast thinking and desire to help someone in need. Because of her actions a mother delivered a healthy child without any complications to mother or child.

On December 11, 2015 at approximately 0100 hours Corporal Jason Turner and Deputy Matthew Sanderson were dispatched to an accident on I-20 at the Canal Bridge. A tractor trailer had run off the road and into the Canal. The driver of the truck had become free of the cab and was yelling for help. Cpl. Turner and Dep. Sanderson were able to locate the driver near the bank of the Canal. Both Cpl. Turner and Dep. Sanderson braved the cold, dark water and brought the driver to safety. The driver had a large laceration to the head and was experiencing paralysis when he was found. They remained with the driver until the Fire Department’s Water Rescue arrived and helped facilitate the extraction of the driver from the water. These Deputies faced treacherous conditions to save this person's life.

Due to their fast thinking, level of experience, and desire to help those in need, a life was saved.

Officers were dispatched to University Hospital parking deck level 6 in reference to a subject threatening to jump. Upon arrival, Officers found the subject on the outside of the barrier wall standing on a 6” ledge and holding onto the wall for support. Sergeant Ronald Harden made contact with the subject and began talking with him. Several times he would lean out, hanging onto the wall to keep from falling. He stated he was just getting the courage up to let go. He then stood up on the wall, walking it like a tight rope and almost lost his balance. Sergeant Harden convinced him to sit down on the wall. He sat down with his back to the deputies. He had previously given a time frame of approx. 10 min and then he was going to jump.

Sergeant Harden continued to talk to him trying to encourage him to come back on the other side of the wall. Sergeant Harden positioned himself on his right side during the conversation. While talking with Sergeant Harden other deputies were able to ease up on the left side of him. Seeing an opportunity and fearing the subject would jump or fall at any moment, Deputy Jason McCall grabbed the subject and pulled him back onto the deck.  He was assisted by Deputy Brent Turner, Deputy Philip Clark, and Deputy Richard Justice.  The subject was taken into protective custody and transported to the emergency room. I feel that if not for the actions of all the deputies involved the subject may have jumped and a tragic end would have occurred.

    On November 7, 2015, at approximately 0032 hours, Deputies Jerry Martinez and Deputy Tywann Brantley were conducting surveillance on the Circle K (1998 Gordon Highway) due to a rash of Armed Robberies in the area.  While on surveillance, Deputy Brantley observed a heavy set black male come from behind the business and survey the parking lot.  Deputy Brantley then contacted Deputy Martinez and advised him of the suspicious activity.  Deputy Martinez arrived and observed another individual approach from the other side of the business wearing all black and a (Halloween Style) mask duck below the front window and entered the business.  Deputy Martinez approached the business and was able to view that the suspect was holding the clerk at gun point and demanding money.

   Deputy Martinez waited for an appropriate time to gain an advantage on the suspect and not place the clerk in harm’s way. Deputy Martinez then observed the suspect put the handgun down to his side and leaned over the counter to view the cash drawer.  Deputy Martinez then entered the business and held the suspect at gun point demanding him to drop his gun and get on the ground.  Deputy Martinez held his ground placing him in harm’s way, even after the suspect hesitated to put the gun down.  The suspect then placed his gun on the counter and got on the ground where Deputy Martinez was able to place him into custody. Deputy Tywann Brantley and Deputy Michael Sizemore were able to take the second suspect into custody. Both suspects were later interviewed by CID and confessed to four additional robberies that they had committed in the past two weeks.  Their actions are appreciated by this agency and the citizens of Richmond County for their quick response to our agency and community in the apprehending of these violent felons.

On October 15^th, 2015 the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Intelligence Bureau became aware of threats made by a gang affiliate who was conspiring to initiate confrontation at the Richmond County Fair. Although this gang affiliate was warned by deputies not to go to the fair, Deputy Saal observed this suspect on fairground property with a number of other connected subjects. Deputy Saal stopped the suspect and conducted a “Terry Frisk” for weapons. During the frisk, Deputy Saal found a Smith and Wesson 38 Special revolver concealed on the person of the suspect. It was later determined that the revolver had been reported stolen in a past residential burglary. Further investigation would reveal that the other subjects at the scene were in possession of burglary tools found inside their vehicle, and all suspects were connected to the Gangster Disciples Gang. This case has been referred to the District’s Attorney who is interested in these suspects being prosecuted on gang charges.   

This is a great example of teamwork and a proactive effort to prevent crime.  Proper dissemination of intelligence through the channels was the key in expediting success in this situation.  In this case, there is little doubt that a violent crime or worse was prevented. His actions are appreciated by this agency and the citizens of Richmond County.

On October 23, 2015 at 0250 hours, deputies were dispatched to 2415 Cunningham Drive in reference to shots fired. Enroute to the location, Deputy Vashion Staley saw a subject duck behind bushes and a tree at 1913 Tubman Home Road.  Deputy Staley stopped to investigate and found the subject on his hands and knees and a weapon underneath him. The weapon was a S&W M&P 9mm.  Approximately twenty minutes later a victim arrived at Georgia Regents Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the head. Investigators believe the subject that Deputy Staley apprehended is the shooter. The victim is brain dead, but still on life support and not expected to survive.

Because of Deputy Staley's attentiveness to the area enroute to the call and his extra effort to stop and investigate, a possible murder suspect and gun were taken off the streets of Richmond County. I would like to commend Deputy Staley for a job well done. Deputy Staley actions are appreciated by this agency and the citizens of Richmond County.

Captain Scott Gay is to be commended for his actions on September 15, 2015 which resulted in the saving of a life.

Dated this day, the Thirteenth day of October, Two Thousand and Fifteen.

On September 15, 2015, at approximately 0720 hours, Capt. Scott Gay observed a traffic accident on Washington Road just East of Town Centre Drive.  Columbia County Sheriff’s Office had units responding and when they arrived they found Captain Gay performing CPR on one of the drivers involved.  Captain Gay continued to perform CPR until he was relieved by Fire and EMS personnel. The EMS crew loaded the driver in the ambulance and was able to revive him at the scene.  All three paramedics credited Captain Gay with saving the driver’s life and giving him the opportunity at a fighting chance for survival.

Sgt. Lyons with the CCSO briefly spoke to Captain Gay at the scene, and stated that Captain Gay was humble and attempted to downplay the importance of what he had done to assist a person who was in dire medical condition.  Had this not been brought to our attention, Captain Gay would not have sought out any praise or recognition for his actions, in keeping with his professionalism and sense of duty. 

His actions reflect well on his personal commitment to service, and are a credit to himself and our agency. Due to his actions a life was saved.

On August 29, 2015 at approximately 1903 hours, Deputies Charles Kaminer and Thomas Andrews were assisting Deputy Evan Vinston with a disabled vehicle on Belair Road. While at that location, a black male came running up the road yelling “He hung himself”.  Deputy Kaminer and Deputy Andrews got into their patrol cars and followed the subject to 3751 Belair Road. They noticed a male subject hanging from a tree limb by a cable that was tied around his neck. Both deputies immediately ran to him, where Deputy Andrews grabbed him to relieve the pressure from the cable, while Deputy Kaminer attempted to cut the cable. It was determined that the cable had metal inside, therefore Deputy Kaminer had to untie the knots in the cable. Deputies Andrews and Kaminer removed the cable from around his neck, and laid him flat on his back to begin CPR. The subject’s body was blue, with a faint pulse and he was not breathing. Deputy Andrews gave 1 chest compression and performed a sternum rub causing him to slightly gasp for air. Deputy Andrews was given a Bag Valve Mask (BVM) from Corporal Thigpen’s vehicle. Deputy Andrews began ventilating the subject as Deputy Kaminer assisted with securing the airway. Both deputies continued this process until First Responders arrived on scene.

Due to their fast thinking, level of experience, and desire to help those in need, a life was saved.

On May 2, 2015 at approximately 1224 hours, Deputy Ty Dailey was in the parking lot of the Rite Aid at 2501 Tobacco Road when he was approached by a female who stated that her father was having a heart attack in the Taco Bell parking lot. Deputy Dailey rushed to the parking lot to find Mr. Ronald Collins in his vehicle unresponsive with no signs of breathing or a pulse. Deputy Dailey radioed for medical assistance. Deputy Dailey then pulled Mr. Collins from his vehicle and started CPR until the arrival of Gold Cross and first responders. Mr. Collins was revived on the scene by medical personnel. It is without a doubt that due to proper training and a quick response from Deputy Dailey, Mr. Collins life was saved.

Deputy Dailey’s quick response was the critical factor in the survival of Mr. Collins. Deputy Dailey's actions are a credit not only to himself, but the Sheriff's Office as a whole.

        On July 23rd, 2015 while on routine traffic enforcement duties on the 2800 block of Glenn Hills Drive, Deputy Marlon Campbell observed a silver Chevrolet Impala traveling at an increased rate of speed traveling south on Glenn Hills Dr. He was able to catch up to the vehicle when it stopped at Glenn Hills Drive and Vernon Drive. Deputy Campbell encountered a Mr. Collier, who was the driver and learned that his son who was being held by the mother, Ms. Davis in the front passenger seat was not breathing. Deputy Campbell made contact with the juvenile and found him to be cold to the touch, cyanotic, not breathing and was not able to palpate a pulse. Deputy Campbell immediately took action starting CPR and requesting EMS to the scene. I, Corporal Schaffer along with Deputy Usry, T3, responded to the scene to assist Deputy Campbell. Prior to our arrival Deputy Campbell was able to get the juvenile breathing again and was able to get a faint palatable pulse. EMS and First Responders arrived on scene and continued to provide emergency care for the juvenile. The juvenile was transported to the Georgia Regents University Medical Center and was listed in critical but stable condition.

Based on my years of service in the military as a combat trained medical specialist, Deputy Campbell's calm reaction and quick action in my estimate was the critical factor in the child's surviving to be transported to a Medical Facility for a higher level of care that the child was desperately in need of. Deputy Campbell's actions are a credit not only to himself, but the Traffic Safety Division and the Sheriff's Office as a whole.

On June 9, 2015, Sergeant McCormick, conducted a traffic stop at the Shell Gas Station at 3105 Deans Bridge Road.  Corporal Dale Roberts came to assistance of Sergeant McCormick during the stop. The driver of the vehicle, Ms. Latoya Burns pulled up to the gas station and got out of her car yelling that her baby, Jayceon Burns, one year of age, was not breathing. Corporal Roberts did not hesitate as he rushed to the car and began performing CPR on the one-year old. He continued performing CPR until the baby regained consciousness and medical help arrived. Due to the quick response of Cpl. Roberts and his professional training, he was able to revive the child within a time frame that did not cause further injury or harm to the child.

Saving the life of a child is one of the greatest acts that an officer can perform. Corporal Dale Roberts' actions reflect great credit upon himself, his fellow officers and the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

On April 20, 2015 the Lucky Spot convenience store at 1237 Gordon Hwy was robbed at gun point by two individuals while a third suspect waited nearby in a getaway vehicle. Witnesses observed the two gunmen run to the waiting car, described as white and possibly a Honda or Hyundai, parked on the side street.  The witness described the driver as a young black female.  Deputy Richard Justice immediately proceeded to the area and began a search for a car fitting that description.  About 40 minutes after the robbery, Deputy Justice saw a white Hyundai Elantra traveling on Deans Bridge Road approaching the Gordon Hwy.  He observed that the vehicle was operated by a young black female.  He, along with Deputy Christian Gandy conducted a traffic stop at Richmond Hill Rd and Deans Bridge Road and detained the suspect for investigators. Further investigation revealed this subject was in fact the getaway driver of the robbery at the Lucky Spot and appears to be involved in at least four other area robberies. In fact this arrest put into motion a chain reaction which identified two additional robbery suspects who were also arrested.

Deputies Justice and Gandy are to be commended for their quick action and dedication to duty which resulted in removing two violent felons from our streets. Your actions are appreciated by this agency and all of Richmond County.

On Wednesday February 25, 2015 at 1206 hours Deputy Sudiran Soosaipillai was assisting Deputy Jarrett Nieves arresting a possible burglary suspect on 3rd Street at Ellis Street.  During this time a Red Honda Accord (GA-982AGM) stopped at the west bound stop sign on Ellis Street at 3rd Street.  The front seat passenger waived and said "Hello."  Deputy Soosaipillai recognized the driver of the vehicle who had four Counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon pending for his arrest.  The driver of the vehicle, Timothy Patrick Almy,  who was taken into custody by Deputy Soosaipillai with no further incident.  This arrest then led to two stolen lap top computers being recovered in the suspect's Room at 210 Boy Scout Road (Knight's Inn).  One of the lap top computers was taken in a burglary in the state of South Carolina.  The other lap top computer was taken in a burglary at 212A Broad Street in the Olde Town Neighborhood. Due to Deputy Sudiran Soosaipillai being observant and knowledgeable of the area he patrols, a potentially dangerous felon was taken off the streets. The suspect was linked to two burglaries and stolen property was recovered and returned to the victim's.

Deputy Sudiran Soosaipillai's actions during this incident exemplify the professionalism and proactiveness of this agency. His actions are appreciated by this office and all of Richmond County.

On Monday, February 16, 2015 at 1202 hours, Deputy Michael Sizemore responded to Whitehouse Cleaners at 2803 Wrightsboro Rd, Suite 7, for a subject having a mental episode.  Upon arrival, Deputy Sizemore met with the complainant, Tabitha Lykins, outside the business.  Ms. Lykins was crying telling Deputy Sizemore the subject was going to kill himself.  Deputy Sizemore made contact with the subject inside the business. The subject was found sitting in a chair with a pair of scissors pressed against his neck.  Deputy Sizemore instructed the subject several times to drop the scissors with no response.  As Deputy Sizemore continued talking with the subject, he began to press the scissors deeper into the side of his neck.  Deputy Sizemore deployed his Taser causing the subject to drop the scissors, which slid on the floor away from the subject.

Due to Deputy Michael Sizemore’s quick thinking and actions, the subject was prevented from harming himself and was taken into custody without further incident. His actions are appreciated by this agency and all of Richmond County.

In 2012, K-9 Max was donated to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office as a fully trained explosive K-9 through a government program and K-2 Solutions, Inc.  As it became time to retire K-9 Max, his history was researched in an effort to possibly return him to his original handler.  It was learned that Marine Corporal Paul Robbins joined the Marine Corps Reserves in 2009 as a heavy machine gunner.  The unit he was with was getting deployed in 2011 to Afghanistan. While training at Camp Pendleton, CA before heading over, he was told he was going to be crossed trained as a dog handler for an IED Detection Dog.  He flew out to Southern Pines, NC and trained with K2 solutions for 5 weeks and was teamed up with K-9 Max.  Paul has described K-9 Max as an amazing worker and they worked well together.  Paul felt that no matter what happened, K-9 Max would not let anything happen to him or the guys he was deploying with.  They then flew back to Camp Pendleton where they continued to train with one another until deployment.  They were deployed to Southern Helmand Afghanistan where Paul and Max worked countless hours with MAP 3 walking around the desert making sure it was secure for other platoons to work in.  They were there until December 23, 2011, which is when they got on a plane to travel home.  They spent a couple days in travel together and once back in the states Paul had a couple minutes with Max to say goodbye, then he had to hand K-9 Max over to the trainers of K2 and get on a bus to head back to base.  Paul didn't think he was ever going to see K-9 Max again.  In 2012, Sergeant John Gray of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit traveled to K-2 Solutions, Inc. and Max was donated to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and assigned as an Explosive Ordinance Disposal K-9 to Sergeant John Gray.  Max has worked well for the RCSO over the past two years, had conducted numerous searches for weapons and cleared buildings from bomb threats.  Additionally, Max has been assigned to work the past two Masters Tournaments at the Augusta National helping to ensure the safety of patrons from all over the world.

As it became time for K-9 Max to retire, the aforementioned information was researched and Marine Corporal Robbins was contacted to see if he would like to have K-9 Max returned to him, which he was ecstatic.  Marine Corporal Robbins is now a Police Officer in the Patrol Division of the Lowell Massachusetts Police Department.  The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office through the use of donated funds has arranged to fly Officer Robbins to Augusta to pick up K-9 Max as well as the flight home.  K-9 Max was officially handed over to Officer Robbins at 11am on 2/10/15 at the Foundation Club by Lieutenant Lewis Blanchard and Sergeant John Gray on behalf of Sheriff Roundtree and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office 

On December 24, 2014 while working Christmas Eve, Deputy Jason Cunningham, from his own personal expenses, bought ten $25.00 gift cards. Deputy Cunningham then made random stops throughout the day and gave the gift cards to private citizens, wishing them Happy Holidays. We applaud Deputy Cunningham’s generosity and good will. It is Deputy Cunningham’s dedication and genuine concern for this agency and his community that fosters a positive image between the Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Augusta.

On December 12, 2014 around 0630 hours, Lt. Robbie Silas, Deputy Wes Stallings and Deputy Levi McMurtry responded to Goshen Lake Drive South in reference to three suspicious persons. Upon arrival the complainant stated that his wife was dressing their small child when she observed three males outside of her bedroom window walking through their yard. The complainant went outside to confront them and they fled in a white truck. Prior to them leaving, the complainant fired a shot into the air due to one of the subjects possibly being armed. The complainant gave deputies a description of the subjects and vehicle and advised them of a home that the subjects may have been trying to enter. As Deputy Stallings and McMurtry were still investigating, Lt. Silas located the vehicle and the suspects at a residence on Highway 88. After further investigation, two other suspects were located in the residence. One of the suspects told Deputy Stallings that they were attempting to steal marijuana from a residence near the incident location and that there was at least 100 pounds of marijuana inside. Lt. Silas went to the residence and verified that there was a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside and that the house had surveillance cameras. Officers notified narcotics investigators who came to the scene and executed a search warrant on the residence. Investigators located a high scale drug operation with over 65 grown marijuana plants and all of the equipment for the home to be determined a “grow house”. The operators of the residence went to great detail in making the residence a large scale drug operation. Further investigation revealed stolen property from another state as well as guns. The operation had over $150,000.00 worth of marijuana inside and was found to be probably the biggest operation ever found in this county.

Due to their quick response, attention to detail and dedication to duty, a major drug operation was shut down and stolen property was recovered. Their actions are appreciated by this office and all of Richmond County.

On October 1, 2014 at 1031 hours, Deputy Lora Alford and Deputy Steven Kophazy were dispatched to 13^th Street at Dugas Street in reference to a fight in progress.  Officers were unable to locate a fight, but an investigative stop was conducted on a vehicle leaving the location that one of the suspects from the fight was believed to be in. During this investigative stop Deputy Alford and Kophazy noticed that this subject was wearing clothing identical to that worn by one of the suspects in an earlier robbery attempt of the Circle K at 902 Walton Way.  Deputy Alford noticed that another subject standing nearby matched the description seen on the store video camera of the second subject involved.  Both subjects were detained and transported to CID where it was determined that they were the two in the video seen by both deputies earlier that morning.  The gun used earlier in the robbery was located in the purse of one of the suspect’s girlfriend.  By paying attention to details and using good investigative skills, Deputy Alford and Deputy Kophazy were able to solve this case.
