On March 31, 2024, two juvenile suspects were being pursued in regards to a stolen motor vehicle which had originated on Boy Scout Road. The vehicle pursuit eventually ended on Lake Forrest Drive and the two juvenile suspects fled on foot. David Dunagan was made aware of the situation after speaking to one of the deputy’s on scene and immediately made a post in the neighborhood Facebook group. Approximately 45 minutes later a citizen who was part of the Facebook group called to say that he saw two young men matching the description of the juvenile suspects and they were walking eastbound on Wheeler Road. David Dunagan and Lee Blitch were close by, so they drove to the last known location of the juveniles and searched the area. David Dunagan and Lee Blitch located the two juveniles and confirmed they matched the description of the suspects, so David Dunagan immediately notified dispatch. David Dunagan and Lee Blitch then observed the two juveniles from a safe distance and waited for units to respond. David Dunagan and Lee Blitch communicated directly with the units who arrived on scene to give them an up-to-date location of the two juvenile suspects. The two juveniles fled on foot and after a short foot pursuit one of the juvenile suspects was caught and placed into custody.

On March 17, 2023, Deputy Noah Johnson was en-route to the hospital with a subject when Deputy Johnson was flagged down by a motorist on the 3200 block of Deans Bridge Road. The motorist was in distress because her infant child could not breathe. Deputy Johnson instructed the female motorist to pull over. Deputy Johnson stopped behind her and exited his vehicle. As he approached, the female frantically exited the vehicle with a near lifeless child struggling to breathe. Deputy Johnson quickly called for EMS to be dispatched and then referred to his training, Deputy Johnson began performing necessary lifesaving skills to include the infant Heimlich maneuver. After several attempts, the infant began to breathe and then cry. Deputy Johnson then handed the child back to its grateful mother. Deputy Johnson turned the mother and child over to EMS once they arrived. He then returned to his vehicle and continued with his original transport. When asked about the incident, Deputy Johnson replied humbly, "It's just part of my job." Deputy Johnson's selfless service and dedication to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the Richmond County Sheriff's Office and is therefore worthy of recognition.

On February 12, 2022, Deputy Rose and Deputy Matthew Beach responded to a disturbance with all parties on scene. Upon both units arrival Dep. Beach knocked on the side/carport door of the residence. An unknown male inside the residence asked who it was at which time Dep. Beach replied” Sheriff’s Office”. After a couple of seconds there was a gunshot from inside the residence and a female started screaming. Dep. Beach yelled for Dep. Rose at which time he attempted to kick in the door to gain access. Dep. Rose was able to break the door in with his shoulder. Dep. Beach recognized a female lying on the kitchen floor along with a male subject on top of her with a handgun. Dep. Beach ordered the subject to drop the gun. Dep. Rose entered the residence behind Dep. Beach and they were able to place the male in custody without further incident. After taking the male subject into custody it was discovered the subject was the victim’s husband, and he had attempted to shoot her twice but failed. It was also learned that the suspect covered the female in gasoline and had threatened to set her on fire.

On Thursday, June 24th 2021 at 1009 hours Deputy Quincy Cannon responded to a motor vehicle accident with injuries on Windsor Spring Rd just south of Tobacco Road. Upon arriving on scene and making contacting with the driver of an overturned vehicle, Deputy Cannon observed that the driver was missing his left arm and was losing a lot of blood. Deputy Cannon quickly returned to his vehicle and retrieved a tourniquet from the patrol car. Deputy Cannon was able to successfully apply the tourniquet to stop the bleeding prior to helping the driver out of the overturned vehicle. A follow up was conducted with AUMC on the driver on June 29th 2021. The medical staff was not able to re-attach his arm but he is now up walking around and is doing good with the recovery. If it was not for the quick decision to retrieve a tourniquet from the patrol and properly apply it above the amputated arm, I believe that the driver would have died due to this significant life-threatening injury.

The dedication, compassion and quick thinking that Deputy Cannon exhibited this day in saving a life makes him a valuable asset to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Augusta Richmond County.

On May 18, 2021, Deputy Graham, along with Deputy Devante Brown and other units responded to Ridge Rd. in reference to a suicidal subject with a gun. Deputy Brown arrived on scene first and made contact with the subject, who was sitting on his patio with a handgun in his lap. The subject did not threaten to shoot anyone, however, he stated that he was determined to end his own life that day. Deputy Brown and Deputy Graham engaged the subject in conversation. At times, the subject responded amicably to the interaction. However, during the course of the call, there were several moments where the subject put the gun to his chest and had his thumb on the trigger. All involved held their composure and were able to talk the subject down. Deputy Graham contributed to bringing the subject back from the brink by relating personal life experiences - some that would have been difficult for anyone to share. The subject began to feel comfortable and relaxed. An opportunity presented itself for less-lethal force to be used, and after deputies deployed Tasers, the subject was detained and later transported to AUMC. Deputy Graham treated the subject with respect and dignity, as well as showed empathy for the pain he was suffering.
Cpl. Eard Trimmingham,

On March 5, 2019, Corporal Eard Trimmingham, Deputy Prizette Presberry, Deputy Wallace Murphy and Deputy Richard Russell responded to 1241 10th Street in reference to a house fire. Upon arrival, deputies found the home engulfed in flames and a female screaming from inside the front door of the residence. As Deputy Presberry got to the door, it was learned that she could not open it due to a locked deadbolt on a metal security door. Deputy Presberry went to his car, got a pry bar, and immediately pried open the door allowing the female to exit the residence. After the female exited the house, she advised Cpl. Trimmingham that a male subject was still inside. Cpl. Trimmingham returned to the front of the residence to attempt to locate the subject inside the home. Cpl. Trimmingham got down on the floor of the residence and crawled through the thick smoke finding the subject unresponsive lying on the floor. Cpl. Trimmingham pulled the subject out with the assistance of other deputies. Once outside, Deputy Wallace Murphy and Deputy Richard Russell administered CPR until EMS arrived. The female subject was unharmed and the male subject was transported to Doctor's Hospital where he is in stable condition but on a ventilator. If not for the quick actions of these deputies, our community may have suffered the loss of two citizens.

Corporal Matthew Mealing is to be commended for his actions based on his part in the apprehension of a murder/armed robbery suspect.

On October 5, 2017, at 0042 hours, a murder occurred on Fifteen Street at Harper Street. The suspect was spotted on foot fleeing the scene, running across Fifteen Street towards Chaffee Avenue. The path in which the suspect had taken was checked again by responding units for any overlooked evidence. The victim’s purse was discovered in the rear of a parking lot on Chaffee Ave. Corporal Matthew Mealing discovered marks in the dirt median going into the parking lot next to where the victim’s purse was located. Upon checking the bushes surrounding this area, Corporal Matthew Mealing located the suspect hiding in the bushes. A .22 magnum derringer was located in one of the suspect’s shoes. The suspect later admitted to committing the murder and armed robbery. As a result of team work and great investigative skills, the suspect was immediately taken into custody.

Corporal Matthew Mealing is a credit to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Augusta Richmond County.

Lieutenant Elijah Parker,

On December 13, 2016, Deputy Allen Crispin was patrolling the area around Young Forest Drive checking the neighborhood in an attempt to prevent burglaries. While patrolling, he noticed a suspicious black male subject in the backyard of 3301 Young Forest Drive running towards the side door of the residence. Due to Dep. Crispin's knowledge and familiarity with the community, he knew that the subject did not belong to that residence. Deputy Allen Crispin, Deputy Christopher Moore, Lieutenant Hal Hitchcock, Deputy Johnathan Gross and Deputy Mark Phillips gave chase and were able to apprehend the suspect after securing the area with a perimeter. Lieutenant Elijah Parker was informed by an unknown person that they saw three black males leaving a residence on Gerald Drive with one carrying a gun. Lieutenant Elijah Parker, Lieutenant Robert Silas and Lieutenant Danny Whitehead responded to the address and noticed a rear door open. When they entered the residence, they located a black male in the bathtub naked with a pillow case over his head and tied up. After further investigation, it was revealed that the subject Deputy Allen Crispin apprehended, along with two other subjects that were later identified, were responsible for the robbery. Due to great teamwork from all Deputies involved, these suspects were identified and arrested.

Upon arrival, they observed a male subject in the water yelling for them to shoot him. They also saw Deputy Ryan Jones swimming from the shore with a life vest on towards the subject. Deputy Ryan Jones got into the Sheriff’s Office boat with Deputies Palocsik and Jarrett. The deputies tried talking to the subject to encourage him to get out of the water, but the subject refused. A life jacket was thrown to the subject which he threw aside and multiple attempts were made to try and pull the subject into the boat. The subject was combative and refused multiple attempts to rescue him. DNR, who was on the scene by this time, threw a rope to the subject. The subject then tied the rope around his neck and dived under the boat.
Corporal James Ouzts is to be commended for his actions based on his part in the apprehension of two murder suspects.

On April 12, 2016 Corporal James Ouzts was working special duty at the S Bar at 1505 North Leg Rd. At approximately 0130 hours, Corporal Ouzts heard a gunshot come from the area of Idlewild Dr. and then drove toward the sound searching for any signs. Corporal Ouzts observed a white Ford Taurus with a GA paper tag, occupied by two black males turning onto North Leg road with the headlights turned off. Corporal Ouzts initiated a traffic stop making contact with the driver and passenger. Corporal Ouzts explained to the driver that he heard a gunshot come from the area where the driver was just seen, and the driver gave Corporal Ouzts permission to search his person and the vehicle. As Corporal Ouzts had the driver exit the vehicle, the driver stated that there was a pistol in the vehicle. Corporal Ouzts recovered a black Ruger .357 magnum revolver with five live rounds and one spent casing that was located between the driver’s seat and the center console. As Corporal Ouzts was securing the weapon and the driver in his car, dispatch put out a call for shots fired, one down on Idlewild Dr. Both subjects and the weapon were turned over to CID and the subjects were also charged with the murder of the victim on Idlewild Dr. Corporal Ouzts took the initiative to respond to an incident that was beyond the scope of his special, and was able to catch two murder suspects before the incident was ever reported.

Corporal Patrick Blanchard is to be commended based on his actions involving a subject on fire.

On April 22, 2016 at approximately 0805 hours, Corporal Patrick Blanchard responded to 1206 Eisenhower Drive in reference to an alarm. While en-route to the call, dispatch advised that there was a male on fire at the residence. When Corporal Blanchard arrived, he found the sunroom on the rear of the home engulfed in flames and a male subject on fire attempting to crawl out. Corporal Blanchard was unable to reach the subject so he retrieved his fire extinguisher and returned to the subject. Corporal Blanchard and Gold Cross EMS were able to remove the subject from the rear of the house. EMS took over care of the subject while Corporal Blanchard continued to extinguish the fire until the Fire Department arrived on the scene. Although the victim later died from his injuries sustained in the fire, another resident of the home was uninjured in the fire and several animals were safely removed from the house. This incident serves as an example of how an otherwise routine call can turn into a dramatic situation.

Captain Gay: Life Saving Commendation and Honored for 25 year of Service.

I, as Sheriff of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, do hereby very proudly commend:

Captain Scott Gay is to be commended for his actions on September 15, 2015 which resulted in the saving of a life.

Dated this day, the Thirteenth day of October, Two Thousand and Fifteen.

On September 15, 2015, at approximately 0720 hours, Capt. Scott Gay observed a traffic accident on Washington Road just East of Town Centre Drive. Columbia County Sheriff’s Office had units responding and when they arrived they found Captain Gay performing CPR on one of the drivers involved. Captain Gay continued to perform CPR until he was relieved by Fire and EMS personnel. The EMS crew loaded the driver in the ambulance and was able to revive him at the scene. All three paramedics credited Captain Gay with saving the driver’s life and giving him the opportunity at a fighting chance for survival.

Sgt. Lyons with the CCSO briefly spoke to Captain Gay at the scene, and stated that Captain Gay was humble and attempted to downplay the importance of what he had done to assist a person who was in dire medical condition. Had this not been brought to our attention, Captain Gay would not have sought out any praise or recognition for his actions, in keeping with his professionalism and sense of duty.

His actions reflect well on his personal commitment to service, and are a credit to himself and our agency. Due to his actions a life was saved.

On August 29, 2015 at approximately 1903 hours, Deputies Charles Kaminer and Thomas Andrews were assisting Deputy Evan Vinston with a disabled vehicle on Belair Road. While at that location, a black male came running up the road yelling “He hung himself”. Deputy Kaminer and Deputy Andrews got into their patrol cars and followed the subject to 3751 Belair Road. They noticed a male subject hanging from a tree limb by a cable that was tied around his neck. Both deputies immediately ran to him, where Deputy Andrews grabbed him to relieve the pressure from the cable, while Deputy Kaminer attempted to cut the cable. It was determined that the cable had metal inside, therefore Deputy Kaminer had to untie the knots in the cable. Deputies Andrews and Kaminer removed the cable from around his neck, and laid him flat on his back to begin CPR. The subject’s body was blue, with a faint pulse and he was not breathing. Deputy Andrews gave 1 chest compression and performed a sternum rub causing him to slightly gasp for air. Deputy Andrews was given a Bag Valve Mask (BVM) from Corporal Thigpen’s vehicle. Deputy Andrews began ventilating the subject as Deputy Kaminer assisted with securing the airway. Both deputies continued this process until First Responders arrived on scene.

Due to their fast thinking, level of experience, and desire to help those in need, a life was saved.

On May 2, 2015 at approximately 1224 hours, Deputy Ty Dailey was in the parking lot of the Rite Aid at 2501 Tobacco Road when he was approached by a female who stated that her father was having a heart attack in the Taco Bell parking lot. Deputy Dailey rushed to the parking lot to find Mr. Ronald Collins in his vehicle unresponsive with no signs of breathing or a pulse. Deputy Dailey radioed for medical assistance. Deputy Dailey then pulled Mr. Collins from his vehicle and started CPR until the arrival of Gold Cross and first responders. Mr. Collins was revived on the scene by medical personnel. It is without a doubt that due to proper training and a quick response from Deputy Dailey, Mr. Collins life was saved.

Deputy Dailey’s quick response was the critical factor in the survival of Mr. Collins. Deputy Dailey's actions are a credit not only to himself, but the Sheriff's Office as a whole.

Deputy Marion Campbell is to be commended for his actions on July 23, 2015 which resulted in the saving of a life.

On July 23rd, 2015 while on routine traffic enforcement duties on the 2800 block of Glenn Hills Drive, Deputy Marlon Campbell observed a silver Chevrolet Impala traveling at an increased rate of speed traveling south on Glenn Hills Dr. He was able to catch up to the vehicle when it stopped at Glenn Hills Drive and Vernon Drive. Deputy Campbell encountered a Mr. Collier, who was the driver and learned that his son who was being held by the mother, Ms. Davis in the front passenger seat was not breathing. Deputy Campbell made contact with the juvenile and found him to be cold to the touch, cyanotic, not breathing and was not able to palpate a pulse. Deputy Campbell immediately took action starting CPR and requesting EMS to the scene. I, Corporal Schaffer along with Deputy Usry, T3, responded to the scene to assist Deputy Campbell. Prior to our arrival Deputy Campbell was able to get the juvenile breathing again and was able to get a faint palatable pulse. EMS and First Responders arrived on scene and continued to provide emergency care for the juvenile. The juvenile was transported to the Georgia Regents University Medical Center and was listed in critical but stable condition.

Based on my years of service in the military as a combat trained medical specialist, Deputy Campbell's calm reaction and quick action in my estimate was the critical factor in the child's surviving to be transported to a Medical Facility for a higher level of care that the child was desperately in need of. Deputy Campbell's actions are a credit not only to himself, but the Traffic Safety Division and the Sheriff's Office as a whole.

Corporal Dale Roberts

On June 9, 2015, Sergeant McCormick, conducted a traffic stop at the Shell Gas Station at 3105 Deans Bridge Road. Corporal Dale Roberts came to assistance of Sergeant McCormick during the stop. The driver of the vehicle, Ms. Latoya Burns pulled up to the gas station and got out of her car yelling that her baby, Jayceon Burns, one year of age, was not breathing. Corporal Roberts did not hesitate as he rushed to the car and began performing CPR on the one-year old. He continued performing CPR until the baby regained consciousness and medical help arrived. Due to the quick response of Cpl. Roberts and his professional training, he was able to revive the child within a time frame that did not cause further injury or harm to the child.

Saving the life of a child is one of the greatest acts that an officer can perform. Corporal Dale Roberts' actions reflect great credit upon himself, his fellow officers and the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

On March 25, 2015 at approximately 0930 hours a female, later identified as Ashpiana Long, approached Deputy Eugene Brantley and asked him to call 911 because her one year old child, Ayden Long, was not breathing. Nine-one-one was called and Deputy Louise Staten came from her courtroom to assist. She determined that the child was not breathing and immediately began performing CPR. The child started breathing again for a brief period, and then stopped breathing again. Corporal Walter Ashley, who is one of the Sheriff’s Office’s CPR instructors, began additional CPR and the child began breathing again. The child was breathing when the EMTs arrived and transported the child to the hospital. The child was awake and stable upon transport.

Deputy Brantley, Deputy Staten and Corporal Ashley are to be commended for their response. The actions of these deputies without a doubt saved a life. Our agency and community are very grateful for your service with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Jacob Green (seen in photo)Deputy David Welchel, Sgt. Tommy Usry, Deputy Steven Jones (all others not in photo)

On September 2, 2014 at 1143 hours, deputies responded to a burglary in progress at 210 Chatham Rd. A description was given by dispatch of a Gray Dodge Caravan as being the suspect vehicle. Deputy David Whelchel spotted the vehicle and followed it until Deputy Brian Strickland arrived. Deputy Strickland attempted to stop the Caravan but it fled to Warren Rd. where the suspects fled on foot. Deputy Strickland and Whelchel gave chase. Deputy Strickland, at great risk, chased the suspects across I-20. Deputy Jacob Green had responded to the area and joined in the foot pursuit. The suspects split up and one was captured in a field on Skinner Mill Rd. near Crossbridge Baptist Church by Deputy Steven Jones and Sgt. Tommy Usry. The second suspect was located in a closet in an apartment at 3188 Skinner Mill Rd. that belonged to his sister. All property taken in the burglary was returned to the owner. There was no injury or property damage in the incident. The actions of these deputies are to be commended for their quick response and relentless pursuit of these subjects which resulted in the prompt and efficient arrest of 2 burglary suspects. The actions of these deputies have helped to make Augusta-Richmond County safer for our citizens and these arrests will assist with the clearance of other cases in the area.

Deputy Kenneth McKenzie

On Augusta 23rd 2014 at 1625 hours Deputy Kenneth McKenzie answered a call to the Augusta Hotel at 1365 Gordon Highway in reference to a burglary suspect in Room 244. Deputy Kenneth McKenzie had just taken the burglary report from room 131 at 1515 hours this date. Deputy McKenzie went to room 244 and encountered two suspects in the Room. Deputy McKenzie was attentive, observant and acted in a swift manner which led to the arrest of two convicted felons on firearm charges. Deputy McKenzie's actions also led to a verbal confession from one of the subjects for burglary that occurred in room 131. Deputy McKenzie's attention to details also led to the recovery of a lap top computer that was taken during the burglary, the seizure of the firearm the convicted felons had in their possession, and the seizure of methamphetamines which led to felony drug charges being placed on both suspects. The following day, during a pro-active stop for a suspicious situation at the IGA on East Boundary, Deputy McKenzie was able to make an arrest on a wanted person for a felony armed robbery. Upon reading the warrant application at CID, he learned that there was a second person wanted in connection with the same armed robbery whom he had observed earlier in the day on his beat. He then went back to his patrol area, looked for the second wanted person, located him and made an arrest for the warrant as well as felony drug charges for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Deputy McKenzie's professional attitude during the initial call led to the witness coming forward and supplying him with the information needed to make these arrests and on the following day, his pro-active policing methods led the arrest of two armed robbery suspects. Deputy McKenzie's exemplary actions, attention to details and professionalism make him very worthy of this award.

Deputy William McClure

On August 23, 2014, Deputy McClure was patrolling MM Scott Apartment complex. During the patrol, Deputy McClure observed 2 subjects setting off fireworks in the parking lot. Upon seeing Deputy McClure, the subjects took flight on foot into apartment 67. A consent search was conducted inside of the residence by Deputy McClure and the rest of Housing Squad A. During the search, one of the subjects who ran into the residence was located hiding under the bed in the master bedroom. This subject was wanted through Aiken, S.C. for serious felony violations including kidnapping, armed robbery and a firearm violation and had been a fugitive for some time. Approximately 2.1 grams of marijuana and a loaded .38 caliber revolver was also seized from the residence. The subject was taken into custody and claimed ownership of the marijuana and the firearm. Deputy McClure did an outstanding job on patrol and was attentive to persons that he observed while patrolling. Because of Deputy McClure’s alertness and knowledge of the law, a wanted felon was quickly apprehended without incident and a firearm and drugs were taken off the street.

Deputy Dwayne Christy

On August 21, 2014 this office received a letter from Captain Steve Morris of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office which details the events as follows: On Thursday evening August 14, 2014 around 22:30 hours a woman was beaten and her husband murdered in the parking lot of the Wesley United Methodist church during a carjacking in Columbia County. Later, the suspect in this case arrived at the TPS convenience store on Peach Orchard Road and asked the clerk for directions. Many Richmond County deputies were assisting to locate this suspect until it was realized he had left the area and was believed headed to Florida. Shortly thereafter, Deputy Christy stops at a gas station and initiated a conversation with the clerk about the murder investigation. He was told by the clerk that a suspicious black male, with blood on his face and driving a gold SUV, came to the window and asked for directions to 1-95 South towards Florida. Deputy Christy immediately called Columbia County dispatch and advised them of this information. Video was collected from the store and this information was relayed to the Florida Highway Patrol, which ultimately lead to the arrest of the suspect. Deputy Christy's actions were instrumental in the timely capture of this suspect. Due to the quick and efficient actions of Deputy Christy, a murder suspect was tracked down and arrested. Deputy Christy is to be commended for his actions and he is appreciated by this office and all of Richmond County. His actions in this case are also appreciated by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Columbia County.

On Wednesday July 2, 2014, Corporal Trimmingham was patrolling the area around the 200 block of Boy Scout Road when he was flagged down by a very excited 7 year old son of Treeuisha Walker, of 222 Boy Scout Road. He told Corporal Trimmingham that his mother needed him. He responded and was advised by Ms. Walker that her 3 year old daughter, Michiah Walker, was choking on a piece of candy. She told him that she had stuck her finger in the child’s mouth to try and remove it but it wouldn’t come out. Corporal Trimmingham took the child and performed the Heimlich maneuver and the candy was dislodged. He then called for Gold Cross Ambulance Service to respond and check the child.
On 061914, Deputy Michael Rollins received a call to Virginia College at 2807 Wylds Road in reference to a child locked in a vehicle. Deputy Oleg Grinko, the team leader, was the first on the scene and a short time later Deputy Rollins and Deputies Jacob Green and John Scott arrived. Raisa Garnett, a security guard with the college met them and advised that she was flagged down by an unidentified person in reference to a possible child left in a Toyota 4 Runner. Upon investigating Ms. Garnett thought she heard a baby crying. Deputy Grinko also heard the faint sound of a baby crying but could not see it due to it being covered by a blanket. He was able to reach through a partially rolled down window and pull the blanket away to reveal the child who was in the hatch back area of the vehicle. Deputies Grinko, Rollins and Scott attempted to gain entry through the windows and doors but were unsuccessful. Deputy Green found the sunroof partially open and was able to get in and unlock the vehicle. First responders who were present determined the child to be in critical condition at that point. The child was stabilized and transported to GRU. Investigation revealed that the mother, Alicia Manigault, had left the child in the vehicle while she took a test at the college. The child was in the vehicle for approximately 45 minutes in a non-shaded area without the air conditioner on.

On 050214 at 0105 hours Deputy George Edenfield initiated a traffic stop on silver Honda Civic on the 1300 block of Jones Street. The vehicle fled from the scene and traveled west on the eastbound side of Riverwatch Parkway until it crashed into the guardrail. The driver was able to flee from the vehicle in an unknown direction before Deputy Edenfield was able to observe him. He notified dispatch and multiple units responded to the area in order to assist in locating the subject. Approximately twenty minutes later Deputy Brent Espinosa spotted the vehicle on Waters Edge Drive. The suspect ran down the hill towards the canal. He then jumped into the water and began to swim away from deputies. Deputies Jacob Dorn, Tyler Marzofka, Ryan Jones, Richard Justice, and Mark Phillips all entered the water in order to attempt to capture the fleeing suspect. The subject was able to make his way to the river before the deputies could catch up to him. Deputies Dorn and Marzofka were able to locate and commandeer a small boat and followed the suspect into the Savannah River towards North Augusta, S.C. They were able to overtake the suspect, and placing themselves at great risk, were able to take the subject into custody, place him into the boat, and transport him back to the Georgia side of the river. At that time Sgt. Adams and the other deputies helped remove the suspect from the boat, into a patrol car. The vehicle turned out to be stolen and the suspect was charged with numerous traffic charges.

On 040514 at approximately 2220 hours Sergeant Everett Jenkins was working a special duty assignment at the BI-LO at 1631 Gordon Hwy when he heard what he believed to be shots fired in the parking lot. Rather than simply ignore what could have turned out to be a backfire from a vehicle or call it in to Dispatch, he went outside to investigate the cause of the disturbance. In the parking lot he found a victim of a gunshot wound and observed a burgundy Ford Crown Victoria fleeing the scene. Sergeant Jenkins then got in his vehicle and began an effort to stop the vehicle. He eventually got the vehicle stopped at 2106 Cook Road and located three suspects in the vehicle. A weapon was located at 2104 Tubman Home Road. Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries from the gunshot. However, due to the quick reaction, thinking and actions of Sergeant Jenkins, three suspects were quickly apprehended without further injury to himself or others.

Deputy Austin Shepherd was patrolling the area of the 3100 block of Washington Road on Sept. 11, 2013, when he encountered the Randal family. Deputy Shepherd discovered that Mr. Randals, his wife and two children were homeless and had been living out of their vehicle for approximately seven days. Deputy Shepherd further discovered that Mrs. Randals is an Army veteran who suffers from mental issues causing erratic behavior. Mrs. Randals had abandoned Mr. Randals and their 8-year-old son and left in their vehicle with their 2-year-old daughter. It was also determined that Mrs. Randals had destroyed all the clothing belonging to the 8-year-old because “someone had put tracking devices in them”. Deputy Shepherd located the vehicle and during the traffic stop that ensued Mrs. Randal exited the vehicle and begged Deputy Shepherd to shoot her. Mrs. Randals was taken into custody without incident and was transported to the hospital for an emergency evaluation. After the call, Deputy Shepherd informed his wife of the events. Mrs. Shepherd then purchased clothes for the 8-year-old. Deputy Shepherd raised $140 through donations provided by fellow officers to help the family. Deputy Shepherd also arranged a room for the family at a reduced rate at a local motel managed by a business friend of his. Deputy Austin Shepherd is commended for his compassion and his excellent work was a comfort for this family during a difficult time. Our agency and community are very grateful for your service and dedication to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigator Ben Harman, Investigator Ben Parrish, Investigator Keith McGarity, Deputy Kris Lapham and Criminal Analyist Lateisha Mosquera have provided valuable intel during recent CompStat meetings to the Operational Command Staff that assisted in the prevention of incidents of violence within Richmond County. Additionally, they often play a large role in the execution of search warrants and seizure warrants that have resulted in placing violent criminals behind bars and the seizure of their assets as well as ensure all reports are properly documented. Each of these officers is often called upon beyond the normal work day and they are always willing to be of assistance. From situations that have arisen regarding potential gang violence to the apprehension of an aggravated assault suspect who shot his victim twice, these fine men and women have gone above and beyond by working with commanders within this agency and sources from other agencies, even when they were off duty, to ensure that the suspects were swiftly brought to justice. As a result of the hard work, dedication and time away from their families, these officers have greatly improved the Intel provided to all certified personnel within the agency. This information has helped to increase officer safety, reduce incidents of violence within the community and has better prepared the agency as a whole in prevention and response. The actions of these individuals has helped to reduced violence within Augusta, provided for a safer community and potentially saved lives. As Sheriff, speaking for the entire agency, we are very grateful for your services and your actions above and beyond the call of duty.

Deputy Smith located the vehicle and detained the driver. The passenger fled on foot. Max Barker, the suspect who fled, would be the prime suspect from the burglary. Items from the burglary were located in the vehicle and the driver was taken into custody and charged. The next day Deputy Smith was assigned to the 25 beat, but knowing the Barker suspect was not in custody, Lt. Robbie Silas had Deputy Smith, along with Corporal Byrnie L. Hardin Jr., ride the area Barker was known to frequent to attempt to capture him. While checking on a trailer on Hensley Road, the suspect was found hiding inside. After fleeing on foot he was soon captured by Deputy Smith and Corporal Hardin. His capture completed a burglary investigation and most likely prevented others. The suspect, Max Barker, was charged with Burglary and had outstanding warrants for drugs and other thefts. Due to the quick and efficient actions of Deputy Smith and Corporal Hardin a burglary suspect was arrested.

On August 29, 2013 Deputy Adam Bone responded to 3001 Bramblewood Trail in reference to a robbery. The victim stated that what he thought to be a juvenile walked up on him and pointed a gun at his head and said "give it up." The victim also noted two other subjects standing behind his vehicle. The victim thought it was a joke and slapped the gun away from his head. The subject then fled the scene. Bone gathered the information for the report and then went on further to speak with some of the people in the neighborhood. Bone gleaned information that led him to Forest Brook Apartments. Bone found that the witness he talked to had come over to the complex as well. The witness pointed Bone in the direction of some other juveniles that were in the area. After locating and speaking with these juveniles, Bone went to Greenleaf Way. Here he learned the identity of the three suspects involved in the robbery and the eventual arrest of the one that actually had the gun. Investigator Newsome was called and the remainder of the investigation was turned over to him. Newsome related that the gun used had been found as well. Bone's actions in this case are an excellent example of how taking a few extra steps in an initial investigation have great rewards. Job well done.

Investigator Walter “Griff” Garrison was presented a Plaque of Appreciation for his service to the community by Chief Deputy Patrick Clayton. On Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at approximately 8 a.m., while in Thomson, GA, Investigator Garrison observed a male suspect illegally entering automobiles. The Thomson Police Department was notified and upon entry to the area, a foot chase ensued. Investigator Garrison chased the suspect and assisted in the arrest.

Although Peace Officers know they are on duty 24/7, it certainly is above and beyond the call of duty to observe, chase and arrest suspects while off duty and within another county. It is evident that Investigator Garrison will do whatever it takes to help make our community and the surrounding areas better through his actions. Items found in possession of the suspect linked him to additional cars that had been broken into and having him removed from our streets is good for all of the Central Savannah River Area.

Sheriff Roundtree also issued a letter to Investigator Garrison letting him know that our agency and community as well as those from Thomson are very grateful for his actions while off duty that ensured the arrest of this suspect and hopefully the clearing of additional cases.

Congratulations to Deputy Ty Dailey of the RCSO Housing Division on receiving and Appreciation Award from Sheriff Roundtree.

On Feb. 2, 2013, off duty after working a special, Deputy Dailey observed a vehicle from an armed robbery BOLO earlier in the evening parked at a hotel on Gordon Highway. Deputy Dailey investigated further, stayed at the location, contacted investigators and his actions lead to the arrest of an armed robbery suspect. Items such as the gun, clothing, and other evidence were collected at the scene.

On Feb. 8, while working special duty at the flea market, Deputy Dailey observed some individuals attempting to sell a cell phone that matched the description from and earlier BOLO of individuals who stole a cell phone during an armed robbery. Deputy Dailey called for back-up, detained the individuals and subsequently located the suspects’ vehicle in the parking lot of the flea market. Evidence and firearms were located linking the suspects to at least four armed robberies within our area.

Sheriff Roundtree said, "Because Deputy Dailey was attentive and followed through on his suspicions, we as an agency have solved five armed robberies, arrested dangerous armed felons, removed guns from the hands of criminals, and will be able to return stolen property to the rightful owners. As Sheriff, I speak for this entire agency in commending you for your attentiveness and commitment to duty."
