Special Operations

The Special Operations Division (SOD) operates as part of Field Operations and provides operational support to the Sheriff's Office as well as local, state, and federal law enforcement partners by coordinating planning and operations for special events and initiatives involving Sheriff's Office resources. Special Operations is commanded by Lieutenant Hal Hitchcock.

The SOD also provides equipped and trained specialized units capable of providing an immediate response as necessary to meet growing demands of both emergency and non-emergency needs of Richmond County. Special Operations utilizes techniques such as selective patrol and saturation patrol to assure compliance with Federal, State, and local laws.

Members are recruited, selected, highly trained, equipped and assigned to resolve critical incidents involving a threat to public safety which might otherwise exceed the capabilities of traditional law enforcement first responders and/or investigative units. These deputies also provide support to other divisions within this agency, as well as, to outside agencies upon request.

Special Operations currently consist of four separate units. These include:
  • Crime Suppression Team
  • Hazardous Device Unit (Bomb Squad)
  • K-9 Unit
  • River Patrol Unit
