Deputy Larry Watkins received a Commendation Plaque and Lifesaving Uniform Ribbon. On April 18, 2013, at 2 p.m., Deputy Watkins was notified by a witness that someone had just entered a home on Druid Park armed with a knife with the intent to kill the person in the residence.
Deputy Watkins called for back-up but immediately proceeded into the residence. Upon entry, the suspect was on top of the victim and was attempting to stab him. Deputy Watkins transitioned from his duty weapon to his Taser and was able to arrest the suspect without incident even though deadly force would have been justified.
Deputy Watkins was commended by Sheriff Roundtree for his immediate response even in the face of danger as well as the actions he took in order to save a life.

Paul Kervin and Les Boatright

Deputy Paul Kervin, left, and Deputy Les Boartight (not pictured) received a Certificate and Letter of Appreciation from Sheriff Roundtree.
On May 6 at 11 a.m., Deputies Kervin and Boatright were dispatched to a burglary in progress call. Upon arrival, Deputy Boatright met with residents, obtained information and put out the information on the radio immediately. Shortly thereafter, Deputy Kervin observed and pursued the vehicle and ended up arresting four suspects and clearing two burglaries.

Russell Landrum and Ronald McMillian

On May 11, 2013, at 12:15 a.m., deputies were Dispatched to an armed robbery on Lumkin Road. The suspect was gone upon arrival and a report was taken. Sergeant Landrum then took a strategic vantage point and continued to look for the suspect along with Deputy McMillian. Upon observing him in the area, Sergeant Landrum and Deputy McMillian after a short struggle with the suspect placed him under arrest. The victim identified the suspect and he was charged with armed robbery.

Griff Garrison

Investigator Walter “Griff” Garrison was presented a Plaque of Appreciation for his service to the community by Chief Deputy Patrick Clayton. On Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at approximately 8 a.m., while in Thomson, GA, Investigator Garrison observed a male suspect illegally entering automobiles. The Thomson Police Department was notified and upon entry to the area, a foot chase ensued. Investigator Garrison chased the suspect and assisted in the arrest.
Although Peace Officers know they are on duty 24/7, it certainly is above and beyond the call of duty to observe, chase and arrest suspects while off duty and within another county. It is evident that Investigator Garrison will do whatever it takes to help make our community and the surrounding areas better through his actions. Items found in possession of the suspect linked him to additional cars that had been broken into and having him removed from our streets is good for all of the Central Savannah River Area.
Sheriff Roundtree also issued a letter to Investigator Garrison letting him know that our agency and community as well as those from Thomson are very grateful for his actions while off duty that ensured the arrest of this suspect and hopefully the clearing of additional cases.

Ty Dailey

Congratulations to Deputy Ty Dailey of the RCSO Housing Division on receiving and Appreciation Award from Sheriff Roundtree.
On Feb. 2, 2013, off duty after working a special, Deputy Dailey observed a vehicle from an armed robbery BOLO earlier in the evening parked at a hotel on Gordon Highway. Deputy Dailey investigated further, stayed at the location, contacted investigators and his actions lead to the arrest of an armed robbery suspect. Items such as the gun, clothing, and other evidence were collected at the scene.
On Feb. 8, while working special duty at the flea market, Deputy Dailey observed some individuals attempting to sell a cell phone that matched the description from and earlier BOLO of individuals who stole a cell phone during an armed robbery. Deputy Dailey called for back-up, detained the individuals and subsequently located the suspects’ vehicle in the parking lot of the flea market. Evidence and firearms were located linking the suspects to at least four armed robberies within our area.
Sheriff Roundtree said, "Because Deputy Dailey was attentive and followed through on his suspicions, we as an agency have solved five armed robberies, arrested dangerous armed felons, removed guns from the hands of criminals, and will be able to return stolen property to the rightful owners. As Sheriff, I speak for this entire agency in commending you for your attentiveness and commitment to duty."
